HISTORY OF NEW PROVIDENCE GARDEN CLUB
The New Providence Garden Club was established in 1939 by a small group of residents who held monthly meetings in their homes. In 1971, with the help of a grant, an herb garden was planned and planted in the rear of the Salt Box Museum.
In 2005 the Garden Club moved club meetings to the New Providence Memorial Library in the Conti Community Room. When meetings were held in the New Providence Memorial Library, club members supplied a monthly floral arrangement for display.
In 2012 the Garden Club moved meetings to the New Providence DeCorso Community Center.
The NPGC celebrated its 75th Anniversary in April 2014 and its 80th anniversary in 2019 by planting a commerative dogwood tree at the Salt Box museum.
During the course of its history, the NPGC held flower shows where proceeds were donated within the New Providence Community. For example, $200 worth of books were donated to the New Providence Public Library on topics related to gardening, conservation, landscaping and birds. In 2011, $175 collected during the Ichiyo Ikebana demonstration was donated to the Red Cross to aid the Japanese earthquake victims.
When meetings were held in the New Providence Memorial Library, club members supplied a monthly floral arrangement for display.
The NPGC has one fundraiser a year, which is its participation in the NP Historical Society's Spring Craft Fair in May. Plants from members' gardens and donations from local nurseries/garden centers are sold on the grounds of the Historical Society's Salt Box Museum.
